Habitat Restoration at Point Reyes National Seashore
Sunday, June 30
9am to 1pm
Join the original Habitat Restoration Program (HRP) at Point Reyes National Seashore to help protect and restore endangered plant and wildlife habitat. Visit some of the most beautiful areas in the park and learn about local plant ecology while you work alongside park staff to carry out ecological restoration projects. Get involved, meet new people, and make a positive impact on your environment! More details about this workday to come. Check the Habitat Restoration webpage later this month for additional information.
Please join the team next Sunday, June 30 for a volunteer workday at the Paleodunes (north of Sir Francis Drake in the Lighthouse region). Our Community Volunteer Ambassador, May Slen, will lead the group in removing iceplant (Carpobrotus edulis) along a ridge and swale that has shown a good response of native species as the iceplant regrowth is removed.
Details
Meet at 9 a.m. front of the Bear Valley Visitor Center. From there the group will carpool and caravan to the Lighthouse parking lot and walk a short distance to the work site. Tools and gloves will be provided. The group will work until 1:00 p.m, and then have lunch near the work site.
Please prepare for cool, foggy, windy weather even if it is warm and sunny at Bear Valley. Wear sturdy layered clothes (no shorts) that can get dirty and sturdy close-toed shoes, and bring a jacket/sweatshirt, snacks, at least 2 liters of water, and lunch. The work area is free of poison oak and should have still have a display of summer-flowering native plant species.
For this workday to be held as scheduled, we need at least four volunteers to confirm participation by 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. Please respond directly to May_Slen@nps.gov or leave her a message at 415-464-5133. She will be in touch with those who have expressed interest if the workday has to be cancelled due to bad weather or lack of confirmed participants. If you sign up and then need to cancel after 4 p.m. on Saturday, please let May know.
