Habitat Restoration

Habitat Restoration

Sunday, Aug 11

9am to 1pm

Volunteers help protect and restore endangered plant and wildlife habitat at Abbotts Lagoon, the Lighthouse Bluffs, and other high value habitat areas at Point Reyes National Seashore. Visit some of the most beautiful areas in the park and learn about local plant ecology while you work alongside park staff to carry out ecological restoration projects. This month we will target invasive iceplant (Carpobrodus edulis), one of the top two invasive plants that are putting our native dune species at risk. We will be removing iceplant patches in the Point Reyes Headlands to the north of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard along a ridge and swale that has shown a good response of native species as the iceplant regrowth is removed.

Please prepare for cool, foggy, windy weather even if it is warm and sunny at Bear Valley. Wear sturdy layered clothes (no shorts) that can get dirty and sturdy close-toed shoes, and bring a jacket/sweatshirt, snacks, at least 2 liters of water, and lunch.

Meet at 9am in front of the Bear Valley Visitor Center. Please RSVP to May Slen by 4pm on Saturday, August 10 at 415-464-5133 or by email.

Update: Thanks to the July project sponsored by Clif Bar and Volunteers of California, we may have access to move additional iceplant piles into a dumpster. Two very large piles were removed July 17 and 28, gaining us valuable open space uninvaded by iceplant. Thanks to the nine HRP volunteers who assisted with this valuable process, and also pulled additional iceplant in the area.

Our next HRP workday is scheduled for Sunday, September 29.
