Songbird migration is a complicated process. As days shorten during fall many species migrate at night, using their innate compasses to follow the stars to their winter homes. Each year we're visited by an array of migratory songbirds including unusual species that have made navigational errors. These vagrants commonly stop off in our coastal forests to refuel and treat us to sightings of species that aren't normally seen here. This excursion will include driving; there are a handful of spots from Inverness to Chimney Rock that we can explore. Where we go will depend on what we find during the first part of the day. Remember to bring binoculars, if you have them.
