Nothing is more elusive and mysterious than the wild mushroom. Join us for an introduction to the mushrooms of the Central Coast!

About this event

An introduction to the mushrooms of Central California. Nothing is more elusive and mysterious than the wild mushroom. Who hasn't heard about chanterelles, morels, and boletes?

After beginning with an indoor lecture using slide images and dried specimens, we will then embark on a fungal foray to 1-2 local sites that will give students an introduction to the characteristics of mushrooms, common families and some of the more distinctive edible and toxic mushrooms.

This is one class where we hope for rain! Want to find mushrooms? Gotta be willing to get your boots wet!

Sterling Sam is an Adjunct Professor of Botany, certified with the University of California, California State Universities, and California Community Colleges. He is a former student of the late SFSU Harry Thiers, Humboldt State University Professor David Largent, and Duke Professor Terry Johnson. He has hunted mushrooms for more than 45 years and taught about them since 1978.
